Mr Oliver
The only character in the story is Mr Oliver, an Anglo-Indian teacher at a prestigious school. He is a bachelor.
The author informs us that Mr Oliver was fearless and did not get spooked by the sounds made by the pine trees on windy days. Hence, he took the short cut through the forest even at night.
In the brief encounter with a student, Mr Oliver comes across as both strict and kind. He is annoyed to see a schoolboy breaking school rules by being out in the dark. However, the moment he realises that the student. is crying, he displays concern and speaks kindly to the student.
