All Summer in a Day: Character Analysis
CharactersThe main characters in the story are Margot and her classmates.
Margot
Margot is described as a thin and pale-looking girl. It was as if the rain had washed away the colour of her eyes, hair and skin. She had lived in Ohio (US) on Earth and had arrived on Venus only five years earlier.
Margot is a misfit in her class. She alone remembers what being in sunshine feels like and longs for it. She is able to write poems about the sun and compare it to objects around her. Also, unlike the others, she is miserable on Venus. Once, she even refuses to take a shower because she is sick of water.
Margot comes across as a reserved person who does not like to talk a lot. She does
not participate in singing or playing with the rest of the children. Even when William, a boy in her class, pushes her, she does not retaliate.
Margot's classmates
Margot's classmates can easily be described as bullies as they intimidate Margot physically and mentally. For instance, William pushes her away as she waits looking at the scene outside. Also, they accuse her of lying about her memories about the sun. They show their utter lack of compassion when they shove her inside a closet. Moreover, the author too compares them to weeds, showing that they are not entirely as innocent as children are considered to be.
Margot's classmates are clearly jealous of her. They resent the fact that she knows more about the sun, which is why they always mock her and treat her cruelly. Their jealousy increases when they learn that she might return to Earth to a better life.
Margot's classmates are selfish. This is highlighted when they completely forget about her and rush out to play in the sun.
However, it is important to note that there is a change in their attitude in the end. They realise that Margot was not lying about the sun and feel extremely guilty about locking her up and robbing her of the chance to enjoy the sunshine. They seem to understand why Margot was so unhappy on Venus.
