Greatest Olympic Prize: Character Analysis

Characters
The two main characters in the article are Jesse Owens and Luz Long.
Jesse Owens
From the article, it is clear that Jesse Owens was a master athlete. Not only did he represent his nation at the Olympic Games and win four gold medals, he had also set a world record in broad jump the previous year.
He comes across as a self-confident person. This is clearly seen when Long encourages him during the qualifying round. When Long says that Owens should be able to qualify with his eyes closed, Owen's immediate response is, 'Believe me, I know it'. Though Owens does get flustered by the thought of Hitler's theory of a master race after seeing Long, he recovers his confidence after his conversation with Long Owens also appears humble. He takes Long's. advice in the right spirit and does not look at Long as an opponent to be ignored. After qualifying for the finals, he goes to Long's room to thank Long for his help.

Luz Long
Luz Long was a German athlete. He was tall and handsome, and had a muscular physique, blond hair and blue eyes. In other words, he had all the features that a member of the Aryan master race was supposed to have. However, he only 'looked the part'; he did not really believe in Aryan supremacy.
Long was a true sportsperson. He had no inhibitions in helping Owens even though it could have meant his own failure. Long's intentions were clear he had come to participate and put his best foot forward. So, on the day of the finals, Long broke his own record. This pushed Owens to do his best. Long showed no jealousy at his own failure. Displaying sportsmanship spirit, he was the first person to congratulate Owens even though Hitler was watching.
