The Little Match Girl:Character Analysis

The Little Match Girl : Character Analysis

Characters
The main character in the story is the little match girl. Her grandmother is also integral to the story.
The little match girl
The little match girl is extremely poor. She walks around bareheaded and barefoot on a chilly, snowy winter day. Even the footwear that she had had belonged to her mother and was too big for her. Her house is also run-down with cracks in the roof. It barely provides her family the shelter and protection needed in extreme cold.
The little match girl is unloved. Perhaps this is why she is nameless in the story. Her father sends her out to work even on a cold winter day. The little girl is so scared of getting a beating from him that she chooses to endure the cold rather than return home without earning anything. Even death seems to be more acceptable to her.
The little match girl is hopeful and has great faith in God. Even in her terrible condition, she dreams of a warm iron stove, a feast, a Christmas tree and her grandmother. All these are symbols of her hope of escaping a dreadful existence. Her faith in God is revealed in the end when she pleads with her dead grandmother's spirit to take her along. Also, when she sees the falling star, she remembers how her grandmother had told her that this signified a soul would go to God. Her faith makes her unafraid of death.

Grandmother
The little girl's grandmother is actually no more. In the story, she appears as a spirit when the little girl hallucinates.
We learn that she was the only person who treated the girl well and loved her.
The grandmother is a beacon of hope and joy for the girl. The vision of her grandmother brings her far more joy than the other three visions.
She knows that she will find peace and comfort if she is with her grandmother. Hence, she dies with a smile on her face.
