Now let's examine the poem closely.

Key Themes

Impermanent nature of power and glory
The main theme of the poem is the impermanent nature of fame and glory. The poet highlights the fact that public opinion can change any time. As a result, fame and glory never last forever.
In the poem, the people who originally welcomed the speaker with flowers later threw stones at him. Similarly, they crowded on rooftops and shouted out praises. They were so in awe of him that they would have done the impossible for him.
But within a year, they gathered at the foot of the scaffold from which he was to be hanged. Though the speaker may have become overambitious and committed errors, they do not take his earlier heroic deeds into consideration at all

Keeping faith
The other theme in the poem is that of keeping faith.
It was faith that kept the speaker going despite knowing that his end was near. He also believed that he was misunderstood by the rest of the world, and that he did everything a man in his situation could have done.
The last line of the poem reveals the speaker's complete faith in God's justness. The speaker firmly believed God would look at his deeds impartially and give him the reward he truly deserved.
