1.a. The narrator planned to yoke the temple
elephant by means of stout ropes to the
road engine and pull it out of the
gymkhana ground.
b. He engaged Joseph a dismissed bus
driver as the driver of the road engine.
Joseph assured the narrator that he
would be able to steer the road engine if it
was kept in motion.
c. As the road engine moved out of the
gymkhana ground and reached the road, it
began to move in different directions. The
elephant dragged it one way and the driver
tried to steer it another way. The fifty
men, whom the narrator had hired, clung
to the engine and pushed it in different
directions. In the end, the engine crashed
into a compound wall and crushed a big
