TITLE SIGNIFICANCE
The title The Night Mail appears simple, yet it effectively captures the central idea of the poem.
At the literal level, it refers to the overnight postal train that carries letters across Britain while most people are asleep.
On a deeper level, the title symbolises the continuous movement of communication, responsibility and service. Even during the silence of the night, countless individuals work tirelessly so that society functions efficiently the next day.
The title also highlights the often-overlooked importance of ordinary professions. While the train itself remains unseen by most people, its work touches every household, every business and every community.
Ultimately, The Night Mail symbolises connection. The train does not merely transport letters; it carries emotions, memories, hopes and relationships across geographical distances. In doing so, it becomes a powerful metaphor for the invisible bonds that unite individuals and strengthen society.
