Context and Summary

Context
David Roth is a songwriter and musician from the USA.
Nine Gold Medals narrates a story based on an incident at a Special Olympics event. Special Olympics is the largest international sports organisation for individuals with intellectual disabilities. It was founded in the USA in 1968 with the objective of giving the intellectually disabled the opportunity to develop confidence, physical fitness and a sense of belonging to society. The organisation provides training in varied sports and also holds numerous competitions at local, national and international levels.
Nine Gold Medals revolves around a track event at an international Special Olympics event. It describes a touching gesture by athletes to help a fellow competitor who falls down as the race starts. A poignant account, the poem celebrates the values of empathy, compassion and collaboration.

Summary
Here is a summary of Nine Gold Medals by David Roth.
The poem begins by describing how athletes from around the world gathered to compete at a sports event, after months of training. An equally enthusiastic audience was present to cheer all the participants. Soon, it was time for the final event of the day-the one hundred metres race.
Participants took their positions and waited for the sound of the gun that would signal the beginning of the race. As soon as the signal was given, the i runners shot forward. However, the youngest athlete lost his balance and ended up falling on his knees. He cried out in frustration, disappointed that despite months of training and practice, his dream had been shattered.
It was then that something unexpected happened. The eight other athletes, who too had trained hard and dreamt of winning, turned back to help the little boy. They helped him get back up. All nine athletes then walked towards the finish line hand in hand.
Though the race had turned into a walk, it was a truly special gesture befitting the Special Olympics. That year, the running event had nine gold medalists instead of one. The athletes happy faces and the banner that said 'Special Olympics' conveyed far more than words ever could. They delivered a message more powerfully than any song or poem could.
