Nine Gold Medals Literary Devices

Nine Gold Medals Literary Devices

Literary Style
Simple poem
Nine Gold Medals is a simple poem that narrates a story. The poem does not have a consistent rhyme scheme, but has a rhythm all the same.

Literary Devices
Use of imagery
The description of the events bring alive the scenes for the reader. For instance, the poet says "...the pistol exploded/ And so did the runners...". Here, we can easily visualise the athletes shooting forward like bullets from a gun once the signal is given.

Alliteration
Also note the use of alliteration,
i.e. the repetition of initial consonant sounds,
in these lines. This adds to the rhythm of the poem..
"But the smallest among them stumbled and staggered
His dreams and his efforts dashed in the dirt
And lifted the lad to his feet"

Repetition
The repetition of lines at the end of the poem emphasises how actions speak louder than words.
"Said more than these words ever will Said more than these words ever will"
